How to properly unbox and set up an HP DeskJet Plus 4100 series printer.

Remove the printer from the box

The printer should be unboxed and set up on a clear, level surface with easy access to a power outlet.

CAUTION:

To avoid setup problems and potential printer damage, make sure all internal packing material is removed, all doors are closed, and all trays are reinserted before turning on the printer.

Set the box on its side and remove the printer and all other materials from the box.
Remove all tape and packing materials from the outside of the printer.
On the front of the printer, lower the output tray.
Remove all tape and cardboard from the cartridge access door and from the inside of the printer.
Close the ink cartridge access door.
Recycle the box and packaging materials. Go to www.hp.com/recycle to learn more.

Connect the power cord

The printer must be powered on before installing software, paper, or cartridges.

NOTE:

Do not connect a USB cable at this time. The connection to the computer is established during software installation.

Connect the power cord to the back of the printer and into an electrical outlet.
Press the Power button , and then wait until the printer becomes idle.

Add the printer to the HP Smart app

The HP Smart app is required and helps you connect your device to your printer. It also guides you through the rest of the setup process.

Go to 123.hp.com to download and install the software.
Open the HP Smart app, and then touch Add a New printer, or touch the Add icon to have the app search for your printer.
Follow the prompts in the HP Smart app to connect the printer to your device.
During setup, you may choose to sign up for HP+ or Instant Ink.

NOTE:
Signing up is optional and the availability depends on your country/region.
Follow the animations in the HP Smart app to load paper and install the SETUP cartridges.

The steps that follow can be used with the instructions in HP Smart to complete printer setup.

Load paper

Plain paper must be loaded to perform a cartridge alignment later.

Raise the input tray at the rear of the printer.
Slide the paper width guide all the way to the left.
Load a stack of plain white paper into the input tray.
Slide the paper width guide to the right until it rests at the edge of the paper.
Lower the output tray, and then pull out the tray extender.

Install the ink cartridges

Once the ink cartridges are installed and aligned, you can use your printer.

Open the ink cartridge access door.
Remove the black ink cartridge from its package.
Hold the cartridge by its sides, and then pull the tab to remove the plastic tape.

CAUTION:
Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these areas can result in an ink system failure.
Slide the black cartridge into its slot, pushing up slightly until it snaps into place. Repeat these steps for the color cartridge.
Close the ink cartridge access door.

The printer prints a set of information pages, including an alignment page.
Lift the scanner lid, and then place the alignment page print-side down on the scanner glass.
Lower the scanner lid, and then press the Start Copy Color button to scan the alignment page.
